Thousands of kids are in COVID-19 quarantine across the US, and school has just begun

In the past week:

More than 10,000 students and staff in Hillsborough County Public Schools in Florida have been isolated or quarantined, ABC News reported.

Nearly 1,000 students and staff in Nashville, Tennessee, were in quarantine or isolation.

New Orleans School District saw 299 active COVID-19 cases and more than 3,000 students and staff in quarantine, according to district data.

Ware County in Georgia closed all its public schools after a "sharp increase" in cases. More than 800 students and faculty are quarantining, outlet News4JAX reported.

20,000 students are quarantining across Mississippi, a public health official announced.

Schools in Texas counties shut down because of a shortage of staff members.

Beachland Elementary in Indian River County temporarily closed because of COVID-19 outbreak

"we continued to see positive staff and student cases. Closing the school has more to do with the staff shortage.”
On Tuesday, the school district approved a mask mandate through Sept. 14 for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade with only medical exemptions allowed. In all 10 counties in the state are defying Gov. Ron DeSantis' order.

Amherst County secondary schools closing due to COVID-19 outbreak (VA)
Several schools will be closed from Aug. 26 until at least Sept. 2
School officials said students will be asked to provide a negative COVID-19 test in order to return to school on Sept. 2.
Gov. Ralph Northam announced a statewide school masks mandate on Aug. 12. Many districts had already mandated masks.

Greater Clark County Schools to require masks amid 70 positive student cases (IN)
CLARK COUNTY, Ind. (WAVE) - In a note sent out to Greater Clark County School parents and guardians, the school system announced changes will be coming as 70 positive student cases have been confirmed.
The letter confirmed that there have been over 1,100 students completing a 14-day quarantine after contact tracing. There are around 10,300 students currently within the district.
This time last year, GCCS only reported 30 positive cases in August.
